Behind

Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve updated anything. I figured it was about time. A little bit of everything has been going on around here, most all of it good. Wednesday I had a critique in Personal Vision that went rather well. I even had one of my pictures likened to a Cindy Sherman piece. I was pretty psyched about that. I had basically just used my shoot as a warm up since I was waiting for my ring flash to show up. I was surprised about how well some of the shots came out and now I’m excited for the rest of the semester. Speaking of the ring light, it came on Wednesday and the modular that makes it work came yesterday, which means that I can play around with it this weekend and get the hang of it as I ease myself back into some serious shooting.

Also, speaking of deliveries. My memory stick and copy of Roman Holiday are on their way from Amazon and my Clie case and screen protectors are on their way from PalmGear (expansys.com). I couldn’t find any cases I liked on Amazon so I went to PG for that but I still has an Amazon gift certificate so I figured I’d get the memory stick from them. Of course it just didn’t make any sense to pay for shipping on a memory stick so I just simply had to get a DVD to make the shipping worthwhile.

So, all that should be here this weekend. I hope.

Besides that I’ve been trying to clean the house up a little. It’s not that it’s messy, it just looks like 2 college guys live here. Not like that’s a bad thing, but my obsessive compulsive side kicks in every once in a while and needs to straiten things out. It’s also starting to bother me that I don’t have a coffee table. I don’t have any place to put my feet while watching TV. Not that I watch TV all that much (less than 4 hours a week), mostly because I only have basic cable, but when I do I’d like a nice place for my feet to rest. Oh well.

Elsewhere, I’ve decided that I’ve gotten annoyed with my own music collection. Now, most of my friends would say that I have a pretty good collection going at this point and while I would agree I would point out that everything I’m listening to on a regular basis is at least a few years old. For example, yesterday in the car I was listening to the second Weezer album, a 5 year old Catch-22 album, and Cafe Del Mar Vol. 5 (they’re up to Vol. 9). There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of those albums but I’ve listened to them so many times I know them inside and out. I suppose I’ll get a treat in a month or so when Paul Van Dyks new artist album comes out and I was also thinking about picking up Underworld’s A Hundred Days Off, Tom Middleton’s Sounds of the Cosmos and Ministry of Sound’s The Chillout Sessions. I’ve also wanted Underworld’s live album (everything, everything) since I heard it in Chris’ car while I was home but it’s out of print and I can’t bring myself to spend $40 for the import.

That brings us up to the present, Friday, a SCAD bullshit make-up day. My Portrait teacher has decided to be evil and scheduled a lighting demo day today so that everyone has to come. Usually teachers are understanding about Friday make-up days and realize that some students have jobs and have to work on the weekends. Not this time. He’s scheduled one of the most important days class-wise, on a day that he knew only half the class was going to show up for. Arg.

Oh well, I need to get up anyways. This will give me a chance to ask fellow students what they’re doing this weekend and to see if I can recruit anyone to pose for some pictures. We’ll see.

Alright. Time to get ready for the day. Matt out.

Recap

Well, it was a fun weekend. Ultimate frisbee was just what I needed on Sunday. Afterward I convinced Nagle to go out to dinner with me and Lauren. It was nice, we should definitely plan on doing that again. Nagle’s been saying that he’s been bowling a lot lately so maybe we can work that into it.

Monday (yesterday) we had the day off for Martin Luther Kings birthday. It’s taken as quite the serious thing down here so there was no mail and no school. That in itself was nice since that meant I had a 4 day weekend. So, instead of working or doing anything remotely constructive, we borrowed Nagle’s copy of the Godfather trilogy and watched that. Actually we only watched the first two. Six hours of the mafia were quite enough for us for one day.

Having not worked this weekend, that kind of puts me in a tough spot for Thursday. I have a “work in progress” critique and to be quite honest theres no work in progress. I’ve been waiting on my film and flashes. Some of it came yesterday via FedEx so I’m shooting tonight. Hopefully I can get and interesting combination of natural light, street light and camera mounted flash. I really wanted some “magic light” pictures but the sun is already going down so I don’t think that’ll happen. Oh, magic light, for those of you who don’t know, is the period of time between late-afternoon and dusk OR between sunrise and morning. It’s those 1 hour periods of time, at the moment somewhere around 4pm and 6am, that have that perfect golden colored light that makes skin glow with a fantastic luminosity.

Sorry, got all artsy on you for a moment there. Anyway, that’s what I’m doing tonight. I’ll be pulling Lauren, Brittney and Jason outside at various times of night to try and get a few rolls of film shot. I’ll also ask Jason if I can use his digital camera. These are only “working ideas” that are being critiqued so digital is perfectly acceptable. Tomorrow I’ll turn in the film for developing around 8am, come back, sleep a little more, go pick up the film and head down to Burgen to make contact prints. From there I should be good to go. I’ve also got to plan a bigger shoot for this weekend. I’m thinking a travel strobe pack and the beach. It should be fun… if I can pull it together.

That’s all from this end. Later.

Waiting on Nagle

Nagle told me not to hack anything so that’s what I’m not doing. Actually, I’m sitting in the O-house RA office waiting for that tubby bitch. He’d better hurry cause I’m getting bored. Just kidding Nagle 🙂

Frisbee and photo shoots

Well, Hilton Head was fun yesterday. I actually spent a little money and came home with a nice jacket and a few t-shirts. Lauren got me a nice green button-up shirt as well. We also had lunch at Fudruckers, which is always a highlight for me. After that we came home, watched some Muppets and relaxed. It was a good day.

Oh, I forgot to mention that. My roommate is awesome. He got me 5 DVDs worth of The Muppet Show box set. I was beside myself with joy.

So, that brings us up to today. Despite the fact that I need to be shooting a lot of film, I’m going to go play ultimate frisbee with Nagle in the park. I haven’t done that in quite a long time and am really looking forward to it. Tonight I MUST get my shit together and start shooting some film. That’s what I’ll be doing Monday as well. Unfortunately the photo building (and all SCAD buildings) are closed tomorrow for MLKs birthday. Some “work in progress” stuff is due Thursday and I’m afraid I don’t have much “in progress.” My ringflash and my film has been shipped from B&H which means there’s going to be quite a lot of shooting this week before Thursday. I figure that Thursday morning or Wednesday night I’m going to make a few quick contact sheets and that’ll be my “in progress” work. I don’t have the time or the paper (separate order) to make prints yet so contact sheets will have to do.

This raises an even bigger question of who I’m going to take pictures of. I brought my camera with me yesterday to Hilton Head but managed not to take any pictures. I’m going to try again with frisbee this afternoon. I know Lauren is willing to get her picture taken but I hate bothering her with it. I could probably convince Nagle as well. But, unfortunately for me, that’s everybody that I can think of. I have a few random friends in the photo department but I’d feel weird about asking people I sorta-know to stand in front of my camera. I suppose I’ll have to though. I’ll talk to some people on Tuesday and see if anyone would be willing.

Thats about it from here. Later.

Saturday

I’ll make this quick because I’ve got to get in the shower in a minute. Yesterday I spent all day with Lauren. We went to the grocery store, we had lunch, we went ran some errands and for dinner we had some friends over. Afterwards we played Scatagories and then went and saw Catch Me If You Can. Now, from what I saw durring the trailer for that movie, I thought I was being dragged to one of the worst movies imaginable. The combonation of DiCaprio and Speilburg was ebough to put me off but to then throw in a completely BS plot made me want to even avoid this one on video. Then I started hearing rummors about how good it was. Usually it confuses the heck out of me to hear that the public likes a crappy movie but this usually results in my renting of it when it comes out on video, usually to simply “see what everyone was talking about” kind of thing. So, with that in mind I was reluctant to go but since I wasn’t really doing anything else and Lauren assured me it was good, so I went. I was pleasently surprised. It was one of the better movies I’ve seen in a while. The story didn’t completely suck, I didn’t want to beat DiCaprio to a bloody pulp every 10 minutes and Tom Hanks fake NYC accent made me laugh whenever he tried to use it. It was VERY well done production wise, great cinamatography etc. I’ll talk more about it later but on a scale of 1-10, its probably a 7.5 or 8. Go see it if you’re bored, it’s not as bad as you think.

Anyway, the reason I’m rushing around is because Lauren, Sara and I are going to Hilton Head SC this afternoon. I’ve got to get in the shower so we can leave. Later.
