File sharring legal in Canada. I knew my hockey loving friends were doing something right with that whole free health care thing, now this. Shit. I should move back to my homeland and be with my people.

Free healthcare is nice, unfortunately it also means that it is ILLEGAL to offer differentiated services in Canada, basically. And if Joe Bloggs has to wait in line for 3 months for a knee operation, you’re still behind him, no matter where you go or what you do. 🙁
Be careful what you read. What the judge said was “The mere fact of placing a copy on a shared directory in a computer where that copy can be accessed via a P2P service does not amount to distribution” This means you can place a music file on a shared directory but, unless you pay the royalty, nobody can download it. A subtle difference, but it does not mean free music for everyone!
By the way, it is not illegal in Canada to offer alternative health services – there are many private hospitals and clinics. What is illegal is to allow a private (paying) patient to “jump the queue” at a public hospital. You can pay the money and have the procedure done at a private facility. Also, the MAJORITY of patients are NOT waiting in line for months. Most required surgery is done within a day or two, elective surgery takes a few weeks. Their system works – ours doesn’t, but the ones who are making BIG bucks from our system want to keep it this way, so they badmouth the systems in Canada and Europe.

I read that as “you can have it but if someone downloads it its THEIR fault” and that you couldn’t be accused of distributing, which is what all the US lawsuits are based on. They instead place the blame on downloader themselves and not the downloadee. While it doesn’t excuse downloading it does make them back off folks who simply have a large music collection. At least, that’s how I read it.
And I agree about the health care. In fact, my mom is still a Canadian citizen and when she needed health care we took a trip to Toronto. She got care and we were home a few days later. Since I too have Canadian (and US) citizenship, if I ever need major surgery I’m going to visit my family up north too. They US health care system is just nuts. People paying different prices for the same things based on what coverage they have, that’s fucked up.
I with ya! I didn’t know you were 50% normal!
I had a similar experience with my mother – when she was diagnosed with cancer, the treatment she received in the U.K. was second to none. True, the local hospital didn’t have the equipment, but the Health Service paid for her transportation to Cambridge (about 20 miles away) to get what she needed. Will somebody PLEASE explain why the same drugs in Canada are cheaper than here?
