Mailbag

I got a couple more little yellow envelopes in the mail, and that always makes my day. Just wanted to share the fun.

First up, my buddy Derek over at Tomahawk Chopping sent me a surprise package. He sent me an email saying he sent “a couple card you might like”. Umm, yeah, I think so!

Yeah, I’d say those are pretty awesome. A purple border Topps Chrome Adrian Gonzalez (#’d /499) and a super sweet Matt Barnes Bowman Sterling auto. I’ve finished the Topps Chrome regular cards a dozen times over, but I’m still “chasing the rainbow” with the different borders. I didn’t have any for Gonzalez until now. The Barnes is just strait up awesome. I had been trying to score that card off ebay for a solid month now. Derek must have been reading my mind. He also sent along a bunch of Topps Opening Day from what he opened recently. Thank you sir! An awesome surprise indeed!

Cross them off the list

I’m beginning to love the sight of my mailbox’s little yellow flag being up. Another day, another yellow padded envelope. This time with a purpose. Normally I use group breaks as an opportunity to see (and acquire) sets I don’t have. 95% of the time, if the set list is small enough, I walk away with my goal – a Red Sox base set. I then chase any parallels or hits online or through trade. Sometimes I come up a couple cards short. That’s where COMC and Sportlots come in. I swear I’m not getting paid to mention them in every damn post, it just so happens that the occasional $2 here and $5 there seem to be going to one of those sites on a regular basis these days. This week it’s finishing off some sets. For $4.34 I managed to finish off 2006 UD Future Stars, 2007 SP Authentic and Rookie Edition, Topps 2012 and sneak in a couple sweet refractor goodies.

Mystery Card

Anyone want to help me out with this one? This morning I stumbled across this card on ebay

Anyone want to tell me what’s wrong with that picture? Jason Varitek, blue pin-stripe??? Ok trading card community, can anyone tell me A) If pin-stripes were ever worn for an all-star game, a special event, or anything similar in the past 10 years, or B) did Topps/Bowman really really screw this up?

For the record, it’s a 2007 Bowman Sterling. Also, it’s listed twice on COMC, also with blue pin-stripes!!! Check it out here (regular version) and here (refractor). WHAT IS GOING ON???

Andrew Miller – Rookie Auto

So, I did something I don’t normally do. I picked up a pre-Red Sox card for a player that may or may not even have a spot in the rotation this year. It was $0.99 with free shipping and I figured “why not”. Normally I wouldn’t have bothered, but on autographs I’m willing to be a little more lenient. If this was just a random base card from his years on the Tigers I would have passed right over it. That, and I really like the “Moments and Milestones” cards for some reason. They just seem kinda classy. Black and white design, nice classic leaf/banner thingy. I dunno, it was cheap, I also like cheap.

I didn’t really think I was going to have a card to show today either, but non-tracking numbered ebay purchases are always a nice surprise in the mailbox, right? Have a good weekend everybody!

Trade with Ben at BaseballCardsRule

So, after I had posted the tradebait from the Tristar Show last month, Ben from Baseball Cards Rule gave me a buzz and was interested in a couple cards. We had actually met up with Ben before the show and had some breakfast. It was great to meet a fellow blogger in real life. Ben’s a player collector and I sent a Pujols and a Cole Hamels his way and in return he hooked me up with some nice Sox goodies. My favorites out of the whole pile Ben sent were definitely these…
