I’ve got an active search saved on eBay for anything containing the words “Red Sox” and “lot” and starting at $0.01, not exceeding $1.00. I won just such an auction last week, spending a whopping $0.02, and it just showed up the other day. I got a couple duds, but for the most part seller was true to their word in terms of not having dupes and being mostly “stars” and “favorite players”. It certainly helped my lack of Nomar…

I took some time today to think about whether I’m a player collector or a team collector. Technically, all my player cards are members of the same team, or have been, or would eventually be. Does having an Adrian Gonzalez rookie make me a Gonzo collector, or a Red Sox collector. I decided there’s absolutely nothing wrong with both. There are guys on the Red Sox who I’ll collect only because of the team they play for, and there are guys that I’d collect regardless of the team. Ortiz, Nomar, Papelbon, etc. Those players are certainly on the short list, and it is quite short. There’s only a handful of players I’d have any compulsion to collect out side of a Red Sox uniform. So, I guess, technically it’s team first, player second.
With that in mind, I have decided to start 2 distinct player collections. Fortunately for me, both players satisfy the “team/player” question on both sides, making my previous point fairly moot.
Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek.
Why? I don’t know. It could be all the talk of their retirement this week, but I don’t think that’s it. I think it’s the “legacy” aspect and what they meant to Boston for over a decade. I also have a distinct lack of both players. I have base cards for a couple years, Varitek’s rookie, and that’s about it. There’s (by search count at COMC, which is in no way definitive) at least 150 Tim Wakefield cards and 260 Jason Varitek cards. I would imagine the number is much higher, but those seem to be the one’s “in circulation” on the secondary market. I’ve got a long way to go, but I’d really like to put a serious dent in collections for both players this year. Let’s call it a goal. So, keep that in mind if you ever come across mojo for either of those guys. I hear that a Wakefield auto is nearly impossible, he just doesn’t sign that much. That’ll be my “white whale” of the collection.

I think I successfully destroyed the English language with that title.
I hadn’t really mentioned it until the other day when I posted that Clemente patch, but I did in fact buy some 2012 Topps Series 1. I don’t really have anything worth mentioning that hasn’t been mentioned before. Photography good, inserts bad, surfboard meh. You get the idea. That doesn’t mean that the set is devoid of anything worth talking about though. I did get a couple interesting cards as well as some stuff going directly into the tradebait bucket. I’ve already uploaded the photos of those and they’re live in case you wanted to browse, but I thought I’d show a couple of the more interesting ones.
In total, since they came out, I’ve purchased 2 blasters, 2 jumbo pack boxes and a couple packs. I pulled aside all the gold sparkly cards, the inserts, the red borders (from Target) and the patches. Here’s everything worth talking about…

I took a little break from all things computer related over the weekend and now I’m finally catching up. I’ve got some outgoing mail, some incoming mail, a trade, some ebay stuff, and some old junk I found in the attic.

I just noticed that RedSox.com has up a survey to pick the “All Fenway Team”. This year is the 100th Anniversary of Fenway Park. That means two things. First, that it’s the oldest, continually used ballpark in America. Second, that it’s now an official US Landmark and can’t be altered, demolished, updated or renovated without an act of Congress. Literally.
Most of you don’t give 2 spits about the Red Sox, and that’s completely understandable. Everyone has their teams and I’d never begrudge anyone for rooting for theirs. For me though, the survey is a bit troublesome. Look at Left Field for example. You can’t have a “best Red Sox ever” team without BOTH Ted Williams and Carl Yastrezemski. It can’t be done. Picking one over the other is like asking me to choose between breathing and eating. Anyway, just for giggles, and again I know none of you care, I pasted the entirety of the survey candidates below. I also highlighted my choices in red. I mixed my nostalgia, personal favorites and stats leaders all in. For example, Ike Delock probably has better RP numbers, but I’m picking Paps and Gordon. I also picked two or more in the appropriate categories. No need to pick just 1 pitcher when you have a rotation of 5.
