2011 Wrap Up

So, I actually haven’t posted a person update since before my birthday, which was nice by the way, thanks for asking. We took everyone out to my favorite Chinese place and treated ourselves. My grill was my big present and my wife got me all sorts of grill accessories to go along with it, including a really nice “Grill Ninja” apron. Apparently I’m messy AND sneaky. lol.

A couple days later my parents came to town for Christmas. They wanted to spend some time with their new grand daughter. She was a little shy at first, but she warmed up to them in no time. She was sleeping on Grandpa’s shoulder by that afternoon. I think talking to them via web video helped a lot. She knew their voices right away. We had a fairly quite Christmas on the whole. Went to church, had a nice Christmas lunch/dinner (linner?) with the whole family. We spent the rest of the week just taking it easy and playing tour guide to my folks. Everyone was also feeling a little under the weather as well. By the end of the week we were all coughing and sniffling.

Papas got a brand new grill

My father-in-law just did something incredibly nice. He bought me a grill for helping him out this year. A GRILL. My old grill was tiny, 10 years old and broken in so many ways. I was actually kind of surprised it made it that long. I used it pretty much once a week for most of the year for all those years. I love to grill. It’s in my blood, apparently. (more…)

Epic Trade Bait Catalog

I took a couple minutes and fired up the scanner and did, at least what I’m considering to be, an awesome thing. I scanned every single one of my hits, parallels and inserts that are up for trade. All of them. Then, because I’m a visual sort of guy, instead of making a spreadsheet and just listing them, I made an image catalog. No joke. It’s now the link for “Cards for Trade” in the sidebar. You can also go directly there by clicking on this link.

End of the Blockade

For quite a long time now I’ve been blocking search engines. Mostly just to cut down on blog spam. I realized that while it’s easy to stay in my own little bubble, it really doesn’t make much sense. The point of a blog is an outward opinion, shared with the masses. A voice in the crowd that you can call your own. No one is trying to change the world or anything, but on rare occasions I’ve been known to make valid points. Why hide those from the world? So, from this day forward, this blog is no longer blocking itself voluntarily from the world. No more shelter, no more quite corner of the internet. If you’ve recently discovered this blog, than welcome. I hope you enjoy the nearly 10 years of randomness I’ve been known to produce. Also, please feel free to share the site, link to it from your own blog (which I hope many of you are already doing) and make liberal use of the discussions and comments. This also means a slight reduction in the highly personal posts, which, let’s be honest, are pretty scarce anyway. Don’t worry, ranting and raving will still be in fine form, that’s not going anywhere.

Also, if you’re interested in sponsoring this blog, I’m taking submissions from anything vaguely related to my interests. Anything hobby related, computer, video game, sports, food or entertainment. Bandwidth isn’t as cheap as it used to be. Please contact me if you feel like your company would be a good match for sponsorship or if you have anything you’d like reviewed. I do that as well.

Matt out.

Netflix

Netflix

I read about the Netflix/Qwikster announcement this morning and just had to laugh. That company is so severely confused and mismanaging what was a virtual monopoly on the video rental industry that they almost deserve to fail. I say almost because even though I’ve personally cancelled my membership a long time ago, it’s still the representation of the idea that streaming media can work and, more importantly, that it should not only come from Tier 1 service providers.

Netflix was, long ago, the white knight, saving us from Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, the evil corporations that charged you extra for being lazy and not bringing videos back. That was their business model. You would pick up a movie for a couple bucks and end up paying twice that because you forgot to return it on your way to work the next morning. Then, they raised the prices of the initial rental, just to get those people who actually returned it on time. I remember renting a movie from Hollywood video for around $5, going home, watching it, and returning it tw0 days later and paying $10 in late fees. That business had to die. (more…)

Case Break

Sam is planning on breaking an entire case of Upper Deck Artifacts in the very near future. I bought in for $30 and will be getting any Red Sox cards he pulls. There’s still a couple teams left if anyone is interested.

Athletics, Brewers, Cubs, Rays, Dodgers/Dbacks/Pirates, Giants, Mariners, Nationals/USA, Padres, Rockies, Tigers, and White Sox are all still up for grabs. I had considered getting the White Sox as well since there’s potentially several Carlton Fisk relics in the case, but they’re all from his Chicago years, and my wallet thought better of it. If you’re interested, check out his blog post about the break.
