I know this should be in the Digg.com RSS feed over on the sidebar, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. For those of us using WordPress, you might want to check out this:

Might come in handy for tweaking your sidebars. I know I finally just got mine the way I like it, but if you’re playing around with your layout or sidebar features anytime soon, check it out.

I almost forgot. Yesterday I installed Gallery and got it working (with Chips help). You can check it out here:
Photo Gallery
You can also get to it via the “projects” page (link at the top) and soon I’ll be adding it as a link under my “blogroll” for easier access.
Enjoy.

Just a quick little list for the new year. I’ve tried hundred and hundreds of extensions since I started using FireFox and there’s 5 that I keep reinstalling/updating whenever there’s a major FF release.
Adblock – Name says it all. Adblocker that’s unmatched. The best part is that it blocks multiple levels of iframes, so those annoying multilevel flash ads are gone in a single click. It also uses wildcards so if you put in something like “*.doubleclick.*” it’ll block anything and everything from that domain. I spent 20-30 minutes browing ad-laden pages, blocking everything. Afterwards 90% of the ads on the web were blocked.
“Once installed, it’s a snap to filter elements at their source-address. Just right-click: Adblock: done. Filters use either the wildcard character (*) or full Regular Expression syntax. Hit the status-element and see what has or hasn’t been blocked.”
AbstractMouse Shared Bookmarks – Service and extension in one. Completely free and private bookmark sync. I use it to sync bookmarks from home and work to each other.
“Keep your firefox bookmarks in sync between multiple computers (think ‘CVS’ for your bookmarks) and the web. This extension works with the browser’s native bookmark storage so you don’t have to learn any new interface.”
GreaseMonkey – Userscript Paradise. Control the web how YOU want with tiny bits of java-script. Pre-determined pages load your code in place of their own, meaning, you can rearrange, block, manipulate pages that you surf regularly. You really need to check this one out. Also check out UserScripts for all the script goodness.
“Adds a whole new extensibility to Firefox by enabling users to add their own mini JavaScripts and set them per site which can do almost anything imaginable to any site on the net. Don’t worry! You don’t need JavaScript knowledge for this as there’s a HUGE repository of user submitted scripts at the GreaseMonkey home page.”
FasterFox – Performance and speed tweaks for FF. Nice and simple.
“Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.”
Download Them All – Like Getright or Flashget only as an extension and not an ad-ridden piece of crap spyware. Easy to use. Very powerful.
“DownThemAll lets you filter and download – literally in a click – all the links contained in any web-page, increasing download speed up to 600%, and letting you pause and resume the files any time you want!”
Enjoy.

The mere fact that I can write a post while I’m using the restroom has to be some sort milestone for human ingenuity. Seriously. The web while you poop, right up there with the wheel, flight and the lightbulb.
Moving on.
Has anyone ever bothered to do any of those “free Something” websites? FreeIpod, freeXbox, etc. I’ve looked at half a dozen of them and briefly considered giving it a try. All the “I didn’t think it was real but here it is” testimonials are starting to sway me. Free iPods or free GameBoys I could live without. A free laptop or a free Mac Mini however, that might peak my interest.
The only problem becomes getting 10 other people to get “free” trial offers of pointless crap so you can get your thing. And no, I’m not going to ask any of you to sign your life over for 6 months of Entertainment Weekly magazine. What I might do, as any good hacker/pirate from my generation would, is socially engineer 9 other people. That means “make them up” for you younger folks just joining the program.
We’ll see if I have the motivation.
Besides that, I’m also toying with the idea of starting a group editorial news/blog page. You of course would be invited to join. I could envision myself writing about games and tech, Jason about music maybe, Nagle about art/design and cool web stuff, Chip and Chris about tech and programming and other cool stuff. I’m fairly serious about it though. I’d want to go at it hardcore, really try and make something out of it. I dunno. You guys even interested in something like that. I’d covering the setup and hosting costs, but would you guys want to contribute if given the chance?

So, I sit down for a few rounds of BF2 last night and I’m barely able to finish 1 map. I’m lagging so bad that the game is unplayble. I’ve seen and heard the horror stories from the people this happened to when the game was released, but as of two weeks ago I was playing perfectly. Low pings, great frame rate, everything. Now I’ve moved and everything has gone to hell. 2 blocks shouldn’t make that much difference. The cable modem is the same, my computer hasn’t changed, bf2 sat untouched. I don’t get it.
I’ve checked everything too. My system specs were perfect before hand, nothings changed. I’ve updated drivers, checked connections, run speed tests the whole deal.
The average speed test says I’m getting abouy 4.5M down and 250k up, well within cable modem norms. Yet, randomly, a web page will time out or, my main problem, bf2 will hang for sometimes up to 10 seconds.
Gx, one of my fellow Crew members pointed out that sometimes there’s a super shitty NOC outside Dallas that causes him problems similar to what I’m having. He suggested running a quick tracert to our server (which happens to be IN Dallas) durring peak hours tonight. I’m going to give that a try tonight.
What I really can’t understand is the “burst” effect. Its like I’m driving a really fast car… through stop and go traffic lights. I get great speed in short bursts, but when I go to “take it on the highway” and use that sustained/constant speed, it chokes. Something an expensive car and cable modem shouldn’t do.
I’m this close to jumping up the chain to tier 3 tech support and really chewing someone out. Aaaaarrrrrggg.
All I want to do is play the stupid game. Nothing else. Its all I ask of my internet.

Just a quick hi to my bud Jake, who’s thinking about switching from a god-awful Xanga to a WordPress install after I showed him how cool it was and that you can make journal entries from your SideKick. Oh, and in case you’re reading this, you and Chris have been added to the blogroll over here on the right.
